Cantos Migrantes is a bilingual music and creative sound workshop that brings together school-aged students from San Diego and Ensenada, Baja California to reflect on migration, both ecological and human, through deep listening, sound-making, and cross-border exchange. Inspired by the migration journey of the gray whale, which travels thousands of miles from the Arctic to the warm birthing lagoons of Baja California, the workshop invites participants to consider migration as an act of survival, care, and collective knowledge. Through discussion, and creative activities, students work collaboratively to create visual migration maps that function as graphic scores. These scores will later be interpreted and performed as musical works in concerts in both Ensenada and San Diego, extending the students’ voices beyond the workshop itself. Throughout the process, participants reflect on what it means to communicate across distance, engaging with both the material dimensions of communication and fostering empathy, connection, and a shared sense of belonging across borders.

Cantos Migrantes es un taller bilingüe de música y creación sonora que reúne a estudiantes de primaria y secundaria de San Diego y Ensenada, Baja California, para reflexionar sobre la migración, tanto ecológica como humana, a través de la escucha atenta, la creación de sonidos y el intercambio transfronterizo. Inspirado en el viaje migratorio de la ballena gris, que recorre miles de kilómetros desde el Ártico hasta las cálidas lagunas de Baja California donde da a luz, el taller invita a los participantes a considerar la migración como un acto de supervivencia, cuidado y conocimiento colectivo. Mediante el diálogo y actividades creativas, los estudiantes trabajan en colaboración para crear mapas visuales de migración que funcionan como partituras gráficas. Estas partituras se interpretarán posteriormente como obras musicales en conciertos tanto en Ensenada como en San Diego, extendiendo las voces de los estudiantes más allá del taller. A lo largo del proceso, los participantes reflexionan sobre lo que significa comunicarse a distancia, explorando las dimensiones materiales de la comunicación y fomentando la empatía, la conexión y un sentido compartido de pertenencia a través de las fronteras.

TERESA DIAZ DE COSSIO

TERESA DÍAZ DE COSSIO is an active member of in^set and has had the opportunity to perform with figures such as Los Tigres del Norte and George Lewis. She has been a fellow at The Banff Center, Darmstadt Summer Institute, Curating Diversity, and a recipient of the Future of Music Faculty Fellowship (CIM-Sphinx Foundation). Teresa has presented her research on the composer Alida Vázquez at 'Unsung Stories: Women at Columbia's Computer Music Center' and the International Musicological Society. She is currently a doctoral candidate at UC San Diego and also serves as a co-producer at Neofonia, the Festival de Música Nueva in Ensenada.

TERESA DÍAZ DE COSSIO es una miembro activo de in^set, y ha tenido la oportunidad de participar junto a figuras como Los Tigres del Norte y George Lewis. Ha participado en programas como The Banff Center, Darmstadt Summer Institute, Curating Diversity, y recibido la Beca Future of Music Faculty (Fundación CIM-Sphinx). Teresa ha presentado su investigación sobre la compositora Alida Vázquez en 'Unsung Stories: Women at Columbia's Computer Music Center' y en la International Musicological Society. Actualmente, se encuentra realizando su doctorado en la Universidad de California, San Diego (UCSD), y también ejerce como co-productora en Neofonia, el Festival de Música Nueva en Ensenada.
